DRIVING LICENCE · PHOTO CHANGE

Need to change the photo on your driving licence?

A poor, damaged or outdated photo does not usually mean you need to apply for a completely new driving licence. Parivahan's duplicate-licence guidance specifically covers cases where the photograph on the licence needs replacement.

DL HELP

Simple, practical guidance for Indian driving-licence services. We are an independent website; applications and official records are handled by government portals.

Before you start: Parivahan's published guidance says a duplicate driving licence may be issued when the photograph affixed to the licence requires replacement. It also identifies Form 2 as the relevant application and notes that fees apply as prescribed.

Information on this page is based on current guidance published by DigiLocker and Parivahan Sewa. State/RTO workflows, document lists and fees can change, so always follow the instructions shown on the official portal.

When can the DL photo be replaced?

If the photograph is damaged, unreadable or otherwise needs replacement, the duplicate/replacement route is the first service to check.

Do not create a new learner or permanent licence application just because you want a replacement photograph. The published duplicate-DL guidance specifically includes photograph replacement.

The final decision and exact workflow remain with the licensing authority handling your record.

How the photo replacement process works

Open the official Sarathi portal and choose the state that issued your DL.

Select the duplicate/replacement DL service where available.

Enter your licence details and complete the identity/record verification steps.

Upload a photograph in the format and size requested by the portal if an online upload is provided. The central Form 2 includes a passport-size photograph area and its online version refers to uploading the photo.

Pay the official fee shown by the service.

If an RTO visit or biometric/photo capture is required, attend the appointment as instructed.

Keep your application receipt until the replacement licence is issued.

What should the new photograph look like?

Use a recent, clear photograph that follows the portal's technical requirements.

Do not upload a cropped screenshot of an old licence or an edited image that makes you difficult to identify.

If the RTO requires a live photograph or an in-person capture, follow that instruction rather than relying on a file upload.

Photo change versus other DL corrections

If only the photograph needs replacement, use the photo/duplicate route.

If your name, date of birth or address is wrong, select the appropriate correction service instead.

If your physical card is damaged and the photo is also affected, explain the complete situation in the application and follow the duplicate/replacement instructions.

FAQ

Questions people commonly ask

Can I change my driving licence photo online?
The duplicate DL route supports photograph replacement, but whether the photo can be uploaded online or must be captured/verified at an RTO depends on the state-specific process.
Do I need a new driving test for a photo change?
Photo replacement is handled as a duplicate/replacement service, not as a fresh driving-licence application. Follow the verification steps shown by your issuing authority.
Which form is used for DL photo replacement?
Parivahan's duplicate-licence guidance refers to Form 2, and the form itself includes the photograph field.
Can I use any photo size?
No. If the online application asks for an upload, follow its current file-size, dimensions and format requirements rather than relying on a generic photo size.
