Everything you need to get your e driving licence (e-DL) online is right here — pick DigiLocker or Parivahan Sewa below, whichever suits you, and you'll have it in a few minutes.
We never store or transmit this number — it stays in your browser. Clicking a button opens the official government site in a new tab, where you'll enter your details securely.
Downloading an e driving licence you already have is one thing — but chances are you'll eventually need one of these too. Here's the full Sarathi service list, the same one you'd find on the actual RTO counter menu, just without the queue.
Book your LL, and in most states, take the test itself online.
Ready to move from LL to a full permanent licence? Start here.
Licence about to lapse, or already lapsed? You can usually still renew it online.
Card lost, torn, or damaged — file an LLD request instead of a fresh application.
Moved cities? Update the address on your licence without reapplying from scratch.
Driving abroad? Your Indian DL usually needs an IDP alongside it — apply here.
Pull your licence details straight from the RTO database — the "Method 2" route above.
Clear a pending RTO fee online instead of paying at a counter.
Grab a blank Form 1, 2, 4 or 1A ahead of an RTO visit.
Fix an outdated number on file so OTPs and alerts actually reach you.
Started an application you no longer need? Withdraw it cleanly here.
Everything else that doesn't fit a neat category — replacements and miscellaneous edits.
Already have a car licence and want to add a two-wheeler class? Do it here.
Book or reschedule your slot at the RTO for a test or in-person step.
Run through the actual question format before you sit the real thing.
Left a form half-filled? Pick it back up right where you stopped.
Not sure a payment actually went through? Confirm it in a few clicks.
Send in whatever the RTO flagged as missing, no in-person visit needed.
Sit your learner's test from home through the AI-proctored STALL system, where enabled.
Locate an RTO-empanelled doctor for your medical fitness certificate.
Heads up: none of these 20 services has its own separate link. Sarathi runs as its own portal for every state, so every single tile above — and both buttons at the top of this page — lead to the same official state-selection screen. Pick your state there and you'll land straight on whichever service you clicked for.
DigiLocker is the central government's official digital document wallet. Once linked to your Aadhaar, it can pull your e driving licence straight from the RTO database.
Visit the official DigiLocker website or install the DigiLocker app from the Play Store or App Store.
Tap Sign Up and enter your full name, date of birth, and mobile number. Verify your number with the OTP, then set a username and a 6-digit security PIN.
Log in, choose Link Aadhaar, enter your Aadhaar number, and verify it with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile. Your Aadhaar details should match your licence for the fetch to succeed.
From the dashboard, choose Search Documents (or Get Issued Documents), search "Driving Licence," and select the issuer — Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, or your state transport department if listed. Enter your DL number, give consent, and tap Get Document.
Open Issued Documents, tap your e driving licence, and use the download icon to save the PDF to your device.
Parivahan Sewa's Sarathi portal lets you pull up your licence record directly from your state's RTO database and print it.
Open the Sarathi Parivahan portal and choose the state that issued your driving licence.
From the list of services, select the DL Extract (or "Driving Licence Details") option.
Fill in your driving licence number, date of birth, and the captcha code shown on screen.
Submit the form to view your licence details as held in the RTO database.
Use your browser's print option (Ctrl/Cmd + P) to save the page as a PDF or print a hard copy.
A few things worth knowing about the licence itself, in plain terms.
Your DL number isn't random — it's basically a mini timestamp. The first two letters are your state code (RJ for Rajasthan, KA for Karnataka, and so on), the next two digits are the RTO office code, then four digits for the year it was issued, and finally a seven-digit serial number unique to you.
So something like MH0420180012345 breaks down as: Maharashtra, RTO code 04, issued in 2018, serial 0012345. Older, pre-computerisation licences sometimes look messier with slashes instead, like RJ-13/DLC/12/123456 — that's normal too, and both DigiLocker and Parivahan usually accept either style.
A regular (non-commercial) licence is generally valid until you turn 50, and typically needs renewing every 5 years after that. Commercial licences (for trucks, cabs, and the like) usually run on shorter cycles and need more frequent renewal.
Rules of thumb aside, the expiry date printed on your card is always the one to trust — treat it as final, and start your renewal a month or two before it lapses so you're not caught out.
It's useful for a lot more than just driving. Your e driving licence doubles as government-recognised photo ID for opening a bank account or KYC, checking into a hotel, boarding a domestic flight, buying age-restricted things like alcohol, and renting a car or two-wheeler.
One catch: if you're planning to drive outside India, your Indian DL on its own usually isn't enough. Most countries expect an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside it — a separate document your RTO issues on request.
Both are official and both are free. Here's how to decide in ten seconds.
you want an actual PDF of your e driving licence saved on your phone that you can show offline, at a traffic stop, without needing internet. It takes a bit more setup the first time (creating an account, linking Aadhaar), but once it's done, pulling the document takes seconds and you'll have it for good — including any time you renew.
you just want to see or print your licence details quickly, without setting up an account or linking Aadhaar. It's the faster route for a one-off check — say, before a renewal, or to confirm your address is up to date — but you'll need your DL number and date of birth handy each time, since there's no saved login the way DigiLocker has.
A quick rundown of the different kinds you might come across.
The first step before you're allowed to drive unsupervised. It's usually valid for about 6 months and is meant to cover the practice period before you sit for your permanent licence test. You can typically apply for and download this online too, through the same Parivahan portal.
What most people mean when they say "DL" — issued after you clear the driving test, and the one this site's steps are built around. Valid for years at a stretch, as covered above, and the one you'll want in DigiLocker for everyday use as your e driving licence.
Needed if you drive for a living — trucks, taxis, buses. It usually asks for an extra endorsement on top of your regular licence, a medical fitness certificate, and tends to run on a shorter renewal cycle than a private licence. Still downloadable via DigiLocker and Parivahan the same way.
Most "record not found" errors come down to one of these.
If your card shows a number with dashes, try entering it with no punctuation at all first — most portals expect one continuous string of characters.
Select the state that actually issued your licence — the one shown in your DL number's first two letters — not necessarily the state you currently live in.
DigiLocker's OTP goes to whichever number is linked to your Aadhaar. If you've changed numbers recently, update it with UIDAI first, or the OTP simply won't arrive.
Double-check whether the form wants DD-MM-YYYY or another order — a swapped day and month is one of the most common reasons a correct DL number still fails to pull up a match.
No. This is an independent, privately run website. We are not affiliated with the Government of India, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Parivahan, or DigiLocker. Every download and verification step happens on the official portals we link to.
Not on this page itself — no third-party site legitimately can, since only DigiLocker and Parivahan hold the authoritative RTO record. Pick a method above and you'll have it in a few minutes.
Generally until you turn 50 for a non-commercial licence, with renewal every 5 years after that — but always go by the exact date printed on your card.
Yes. Documents fetched through DigiLocker are treated as valid electronic equivalents of the original and are accepted by traffic police and most authorities in the same way as the physical card.
Recheck the DL number format and date of birth you entered. If it still fails, confirm you've selected the correct issuing state, or contact your RTO — some older records take time to appear online.
Yes. Downloading your e driving licence through DigiLocker or Parivahan is free — never pay anyone for a basic DL download or status check.
Check your physical card, a renewal receipt, or old SMS confirmations. Some RTOs also allow lookup by name and date of birth directly through Parivahan.
DigiLocker gives you a saved, official PDF you can pull up any time, even offline. Parivahan's Sarathi portal is more of a live lookup — great for a quick check, but it doesn't save anything to an account for later.
Yes, most RTOs let you apply for a duplicate licence online through Parivahan by filing an LLD (loss/damage) application, usually alongside a copy of an FIR or police complaint about the loss. In the meantime, your DigiLocker or Parivahan digital copy can often serve as valid proof.
Make sure the name, date of birth, and DL number you're searching with match exactly what's on RTO record, and that your Aadhaar is properly linked and verified. A common culprit is a small spelling mismatch between your Aadhaar name and your RTO record.
Only if that new number is updated with UIDAI as your Aadhaar-linked number — DigiLocker's OTP always goes there, not to whatever number you sign up with. Update it with UIDAI first if you're not sure it's current.
Yes — Learner's Licences are also issued through the same RTO system and can usually be checked or downloaded through Parivahan and DigiLocker the same way as a permanent licence.
Technically, if they have your DL number, date of birth, and (for DigiLocker) access to your Aadhaar-linked mobile for the OTP, the portal wouldn't stop them. That's exactly why it's worth keeping these details private — treat them the way you'd treat any other ID document.
In most cases, yes, through the same Sarathi portal — it just depends on how late you are. Renew within about a month of expiry and there's little to no penalty. Somewhere between a month and 5 years late, expect a late fee (and in a few states, a small extra charge per year of delay). Past 5 years, most states will want you to start over as a brand-new applicant, LL and test included, so it's worth not letting it drag that long.
Scroll up to the Quick Services section — it links out to renewal, duplicate DL, address change, International Driving Permit, appointments, and everything else Sarathi offers. Every tile takes you to the same official state-selection page, since that's how all of these services are actually structured.
