A spelling difference between Aadhaar and your driving licence can stop DigiLocker from fetching the document. Here's how to work out which record is wrong and what to do next.
Simple, practical guidance for Indian driving-licence services. We are an independent website; applications and official records are handled by government portals.
Information on this page is based on current guidance published by DigiLocker and Parivahan Sewa. State/RTO workflows, document lists and fees can change, so always follow the instructions shown on the official portal.
Compare your Aadhaar, physical driving licence and, if relevant, passport or other identity documents. Write down the exact spelling you want the records to use.
If Aadhaar is correct and the DL is wrong, the driving-licence record needs correction. If the DL is correct and Aadhaar is wrong, the Aadhaar record needs correction instead.
DigiLocker is not the place to change the underlying driving-licence name. DigiLocker says the name and date of birth in its Aadhaar profile are fetched from UIDAI and cannot simply be changed to a different value.
Parivahan's Form 2 lists change/correction of name as a service. Depending on your state and the reason for the change, the application may be processed online through Sarathi and may require supporting documents or an RTO visit.
The central rules documentation lists documents for a name change including an affidavit and, where applicable, a marriage certificate and newspaper advertisement. Requirements can vary with the circumstances and the implementing authority, so check the documents shown for your state before submitting.
Use the official Sarathi state-selection page to see the services available for the RTO that issued your licence.
1. Keep a clear copy of your existing DL and the identity document showing the correct name.
2. Select the state that issued the DL on Sarathi.
3. Look for the service for change/correction of name in the driving licence.
4. Enter the details exactly as requested and upload the supporting documents if the portal asks for them.
5. Pay the applicable official fee, if shown, and complete any appointment or verification step required by your state.
6. Keep the application number and receipt. Use the official application-status facility to monitor progress.
7. After the correction is completed, try fetching the DL in DigiLocker again.
If the name on Aadhaar and the name on the DL do not match, fixing the mismatch is usually more useful than repeatedly retrying the DigiLocker fetch. DigiLocker specifically says name matching is required for fetching MoRTH documents.
Do not create several DigiLocker accounts hoping one of them will bypass the mismatch. DigiLocker advises users to continue with the appropriate existing account when Aadhaar is already associated with an account.
We explain the process here, but your licence record, application and payment should be handled on the official systems.
